TCTSY for Trauma Survivors
Yoga is a pathway of the self, through the self, to the self.
Yoga is an ancient self-care practice that has been helping people from its inception. Recently, scientists, mental health care professionals, and trauma-care workers have begun to look at yoga through a scientific lens. Their work has resulted in the development of TCTSY: Trauma Center Trauma Sensitive Yoga, a research and evidence based, peer reviewed methodology that is an empirically validated, clinical intervention for complex trauma or chronic, treatment-resistant post-traumatic stress disorder.
TCTSY is the only form of yoga that has qualified for inclusion in the National Registry of Evidence-based Programs and Practices (NREPP) database published by the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration (SAMHSA). Through empirical studies and randomized control trials TCTSY has been proven to successfully reduce PTSD symptoms, and in some cases can be as effective as traditional talk therapy.
Through offerings of TCTSY, Prism House provides opportunities for choice making, interoception, and present moment experience. Each of these acts as a framework for trauma survivors to practice agency, choosing what is right for them in any given moment. Survivors may learn to listen to their bodies, allowing their sensations to guide their choices, encouraging somatic healing that may not be available in talk therapy. TCTSY provides the opportunity for survivors to process somatic trauma that has been stored in the form of implicit memories, making it difficult to access during traditional talk therapy.
Prism House: Yoga for Mental Health offers TCTSY in a comfortable, safe, and non-coercive manner making it accessible to the widest possible audience.
“No intervention that takes power from the survivor can possibly foster (their) recovery, no matter how much it appears to be in (their) immediate best interest.”
Judith Herman, MD
“Recovery can only take place within the context of relationships, it cannot occur in isolation.”
